Ricoh explains why DTF is your next best move in textiles

The debate over Direct to Film (DTF), versus Direct to Garment (DTG) printing raises the question, “What are the benefits of DTF technology?” DTG printing is able to produce large-sized prints of high quality with vivid colors and a very soft feel. DTF printing, however, has certain benefits that will make it an excellent addition to your garment printing business.

Ricoh says DTF is not a replacement for DTG, but it does offer significant benefits.

Direct to film printing is the process of printing your design on a special film and then applying and melting powder adhesive to it. Finally, the print can be applied to merchandise or garments. You will need transfer film and hot melt powder, as well as the software to create your print – no other special equipment is needed! We will be discussing seven benefits of the newer technology below.

  1. You can use a variety of materials

DTF is the best method for direct-to-garment printing. However, it can also be done on cotton and nylon. Transfers can be used on many surfaces, including luggage, shoes and glass as well. DTF lets you apply your designs to all kinds of merchandise.

  1. There is no need to pre-treat

DTG printers are already familiar with pretreatment and drying. No pretreatment is required because the DTF uses hot melt power to bond the printed material to itself.

  1. White ink should be used less

DTF requires less white ink – about 40% white versus 200% white for DTG printing. The most costly white ink, because it uses more pigment and is generally Titanium Oxide. It can also be very expensive. You might be able to save money by reducing how much you use for prints.

  1. DTG printing is more durable

There’s no denying that DTG prints have soft, barely-there hand feel because the ink is applied directly to the garment. While DTF prints don’t have the same soft hand feel that DTG can boast, the transfers are more durable. Direct to film transfers wash well, and are flexible – meaning they won’t crack or peel, making them great for heavy-use items.

  1. It’s easy to apply

You can print onto film transfers to place your designs on difficult-to-reach surfaces. You can also apply DTF designs to any area that can be heated. You can sell printed transfer directly to customers. They will be able to apply the design to any surface they desire.

  1. Production process faster

This allows you to cut down production times significantly by removing the need for drying and pretreating your garment. That’s great news for one-off or small-volume orders that traditionally wouldn’t be profitable.

  1. Helps keep your inventory more versatile

DTF printing can be used to make popular designs easily available in stock. You can keep the best-sellers available to you at all times and apply them to every garment.

While DTF printing still isn’t a replacement for DTG, there are lots of reasons why DTF can be a great addition to your business. You can easily add DTF printing to your toolbox with the RICOH Ri1000 and RICOH Ri2000 DTG Printers. You can easily add DTF printing to your existing DTG printer by simply updating the software.
